Kingston Website Designer | Easy SEO Steps for Google and Bing

Easy SEO tips for small businesses around Kingston, Surbiton and Surrey

Congrats, you've started your own small business website!

So, you've started your own website for your company. You designed it on a hosting site like Wix, SquareSpace or WordPress. Congrats!

But then you experience after a while the dreaded lack of engagement. You look at your analytics and you see that you're barely getting a few traffic hits a month to your site. You search for yourself on Google and Bing with a few keywords and your site doesn't show up on the popular search engines. Why?

Google and Bing rely on a multitude of different factors to index sites successfully and efficiently in their search results. One of the main things they look for is what's called HTML tags in the text structure of the site. What's an HTML tag, you might ask?

Sites are organised by H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, Paragraph1, Paragraph2, and so on. These tags are essential for both accessibility AND search engine optimisation. Google will look at H1 tags to determine what a page is about. So let's go into detail about a few of them individually.

H1

The H1 tag is basically what each page's title is. Let's say you're a building company with an 'Electrical Services' page. If you want it to stand a chance of getting found on search engines, ensuring that the title of the page is present in the design AND it's labelled properly as 'H1' is a great start. This is where you'll want to include 'short-tail keywords,' or short phrases that are very competitive in Google (i.e. Electrician Services).

H2

H2 is something that I use quite a bit to include what's called 'long-tail keywords.' Long tail keywords include other words that help to match different search criteria. So instead of just 'electrical services' like the H1 tag states, you can add an H2 element that states 'Affordable and Reviewed Electrical Services in Kingston, Surbiton, Surrey and beyond.' These keywords really help Google and Bing to know where your business is located, and since so many searches include location, it's a great way to stand out above bigger companies.

H3

H3 should be the subheadings for each paragraph. For instance, in this blog post, each of the HTML headings (H1, H2, H3) is an H3. This element is a great way of including various keywords as well.

Paragraph

Paragraphs are longer and include multiple sentences with lots of information. Paragraphs should naturally contain various targeted keywords for your business that you have researched.

Researching Keywords

Researching keywords is another significant step towards showing up on search engines. Tools like SemRush can connect directly into your Wix analytics dashboard to help you choose great keywords throughout your site. You can also use Chrome plugins that monitor different Google search results when you search for items. You can then get an idea for:

-How competitive words are, and how difficult it would be to rank with established companies on search engines

-How many people search for it.

It's an essential step for determining which keywords to use for your site. Determining which keywords competitors use on their site is another GREAT way to determine how they are showing up when you aren't on search results.

Title Tags and Meta Descriptions

Adding title tags and meta descriptions helps search engines know what your content is. Including short and long-tail keywords is essential! Aligning it with the title of your pages and the content is also very important, but keep in mind that they don't have to match exactly. This is also what people will see when your site shows up in search results.

Conclusion

To summarise, following the below steps is a great first step in showing up in search engines results.

H1 Tag: Use short-tail keywords in the H1 tag for the page title.

  • H2 Tag: Include long-tail keywords specifying services and location.

  • H3 Tags: Enhance keyword inclusion in subheadings.

  • Paragraphs: Incorporate targeted keywords in content.

  • Keyword Research: Utilize tools like SemRush for competitive keywords.

  • Title Tags and Meta Descriptions: Optimize with short and long-tail keywords.
